Is Physiotherapy Covered by Medicare in Australia?

Physiotherapy is covered by Medicare only under limited conditions. You may be eligible for a partial Medicare rebate if your GP refers you under a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan.

At our physiotherapy clinic in Ashfield, as AHPRA registered Physiotherapists we regularly help patients across the Inner West understand and use their Medicare entitlements effectively—without the confusion.

When Does Medicare Cover Physiotherapy?

You may be eligible for Medicare-supported physiotherapy if:

  • You have a chronic condition (lasting 6 months or more)

  • Your GP has created a CDM plan and referral

This allows you to access physiotherapy with a Medicare rebate applied to your sessions.

What Does Medicare Actually Cover?

Under a CDM plan:

  1. Up to 5 allied health sessions per calendar year

  2. Shared across all allied health providers

  3. Partial rebate per session

  4. A gap fee usually applies

How Our Ashfield Clinic - Frontline Family Physio - Helps You Get More Value from Medicare

Not all physiotherapy clinics approach Medicare patients the same way.

At our Ashfield clinic, we focus on making your limited Medicare sessions actually count.

1. Structured, Goal-Driven Treatment Plans

We prioritise clear diagnosis and targeted treatment from day one—so you’re not wasting sessions on passive or low-value care.

2. Strong Focus on Self-Management

Because Medicare only covers up to 5 sessions, we equip you with:

  • Personalised exercise programs

  • Clear recovery plans

  • Practical strategies to manage your condition independently

3. Longer-Term Thinking (Not Just 5 Visits)

We plan beyond your Medicare sessions, helping you:

  • Avoid flare-ups

  • Reduce reliance on ongoing treatment

  • Transition smoothly if further care is needed

4. Experience with Complex & Chronic Conditions

CDM patients often have more complex presentations. We’re experienced in managing:

  • Persistent pain

  • Post-surgical rehab

  • Multi-joint or long-standing injuries

What Happens After Your Medicare Sessions?

Once your 5 sessions are used:

  • Further treatment is not covered by Medicare for that calendar year.

  • You can continue as a private patient

  • Or claim through private health insurance if available

We’ll always discuss your options transparently—so there are no surprises.

Other Ways to Access Physiotherapy

In addition to Medicare, many of our Ashfield patients use:

  • Private health insurance (extras cover)

  • Workers compensation or CTP claims

  • NDIS-funded physiotherapy

Do You Need a Referral?

  • Yes – for Medicare (CDM plan via GP)

  • No – for private physiotherapy
